Jewellery is no longer the preserve of women. Celebrities such as Hollywood superstar Johnny Depp not only made wearing men's jewellery popular, but also confidently demonstrate that it is quite normal for men to rely on the particular aesthetic effect of jewellery. By now, even with men like you and me a lot has changed when it comes to jewellery for men. Men, as with many questions of fashion and style, find a suitable guideline for dealing with men's jewellery in a well-known principle: less is more. We'll come back to that later.

At any rate, the wearing of jewellery with a purely decorative intent historically remained the exception for men for a long time. In addition, in order to be widely accepted in society, accessories for men also had to fulfill a certain purpose or have a specific function: in the case of cufflinks, for example, closing the cuff or, in the case of a wristwatch, displaying the time. Here a strong change has taken place. Nowadays, modern men all over the world wear men's bracelets or men's necklaces as a matter of course, in addition to their wedding ring – and all for the sole purpose of making themselves visually attractive.

Coolness cultivated: why men wear jewellery today

In this context, it is an exciting question, what jewellery tells us about its wearers: what, for example, jewellery says about men and what men want to express with their jewellery. Why do men even wear jewellery? And is there jewellery that is particularly suitable for men? It is clear that masculine jewellery accessories today simply belong to the styling of many men. Unlike previously feared, they do not renounce their masculinity by doing so. Wearing jewellery testifies rather to their good taste: they are considered cool and cultured at the same time, even in their coolness they preserve style and elegance.

Tastefully used men's jewellery does not diminish the genuinely masculine, but can even enhance its specific appeal. Some outfit only gets the finishing touch by the right men's jewellery. While jewellery for women usually seduces with sparkling shine and overwhelms with its beauty, jewellery for men often fascinates by its rather austere and authentic character and a well-dosed virility. An essential motivation for men who buy men's jewellery, therefore, is often the targeted enrichment of a look perceived as a bit too inconspicuous.

The wearer gets a special charisma by the right attitude. Whether bracelets, necklaces or rings for men: jewellery for men should always be worn out of conviction – and be it only out of sheer lust for a stylish accessory. Moreover, a man with jewellery should never feel "costumed", but always remain completely himself. Jewellery has to fit to the respective type of wearer, because only then can he identify with it completely. The question of which jewellery is particularly suitable for men, therefore, can always be answered only individually.

The ultimate must-have for men remains the classic men's watch, as unoriginal as it may sound. Even more than with other jewellery accessories, the enormous range of models allows for men's wristwatches a really suitable, type-specific selection. Men who would like to combine further jewellery to their wristwatch should first of all pay particular attention to the fact that a silver-tone watch tends to be the perfect match for silver jewellery, a gold-tone watch for gold jewellery and men's watches with leather bracelets for leather jewellery.

A perfect match: bracelets and wristwatches

As a fashionable addition to the wristwatch, men's bracelets are undoubtedly an ideal introduction to the world of jewellery. On the one hand, they charmingly enhance almost every wardrobe without being too prominent in the foreground. On the other hand, they can be combined quite easily, to clothing as well as other accessories. Especially leather bracelets for men should make it really easy for newbies to get used to them. The feeling when wearing is a very similar to watches with leather straps – and that is already familiar to most men. Ideally, however, bracelets should not be worn on the same wrist as the wristwatch to keep the accessories from competing with each other.

Incidentally, bracelets are also a suitable choice for women who want to buy jewellery for men. For even if their husband or boyfriend was rather sceptical about jewellery so far, with a men's bracelet men can be made familiar with jewellery – and maybe gradually get used to wearing jewellery. Once the initial shyness is overcome and the first masculine bracelet adorns the wrist, not a few men take pleasure in showing themselves openly with jewellery. At this point, other accessories will inevitably follow. Often these are, for example, multi-stranded men's leather bracelets, casual wrap bracelets for men made of genuine ship rope or – if the wearer has become more self-confident – distinctive men's link chain bracelets made of stainless steel or silver.

Less is more

As already mentioned, a good guideline for the further jewellery choice is the following principle: less is more. The maxim can best be illustrated with the help of necklaces for men. Thus, longer necklaces with overly conspicuous pendants, as they are quite common among ladies to emphasize the cleavage, with men in most cases look exaggerated extravagant. Shorter, more understated leather necklaces for men or men's necklaces made of stainless steel or silver with rather plain designs are therefore to be preferred. Of course, if a man wants to attract more attention, he can further individualize necklaces with a pendant and accentuate them more. For example, classic cross pendants or pendants with zodiac signs are still popular, but the tough-looking dog tag pendants are in great demand as well.

The supreme discipline when wearing men's jewellery is probably the tasteful use of men's rings. Predestined for an especially harmonious placement of rings are both the ring finger as well as the index finger and due to its size, of course, the middle finger. Because of its size, the latter is especially suitable for imposingly designed men's rings such as signet rings. However, especially with men's rings less is more. For this reason, it is usually not recommended to wear more than two or three rings together.

If men want to combine different men's rings, they should as far as possible consist of the same, similarly shimmering metal and, in a small number, preferably be worn on just one finger. In terms of fashion very courageous men who want to live out the current trend of ring stacking very intense, is also recommended to distribute the different rings evenly on both hands. This has an aesthetically more balanced effect.

Of course, advice like this is not only well-meant, but also covered by practical experience. But in the end, there can be only one binding yardstick in the choice of men's jewellery: the individual taste. After all, every man knows best how restrained or eccentric he wants to present himself to others, and how many and above all which accessories fit well with his personal style. In general, we strongly recommend men to wear jewellery.

Masculine jewellery offers men in its variety of forms and depth of expression an incredible number of ways to reinvent their own style over and over again. From the extreme bad boy look of a Johnny Depp, which he sometimes pushes to the extreme with the massive use of different pieces of jewellery, to the subtle detail of a single plain bracelet, which sets a fine, sophisticated accent: jewellery for men can make wild guys look even more daring and real gentlemen even more distinguished. But what is more important: men's jewellery emphasizes the unmistakable charm of every "normal" man's individuality, often far beyond normal level.
